Crysis 4 will be directed by former Hitman 3 Game Director Mattias Engström, it has been announced. In a tweet shared on the official Crysis account, it was revealed that Engström has left IO Interactive to join Crytek Studios.

The tweet also shares that the director will be starting work on the next instalment of Crysis this week. This means that it’s definitely still very early days for Crysis 4 and fans should expect to be waiting for a while yet before any gameplay reveals or release announcements are made.

Interestingly, the announcement is followed up with a recruitment tweet below, which means that not only has the studio only just hired the game’s director, but they’re clearly still in the process of building the wider development team too.

In addition to directing Hitman 3, Mattias Engström was also a level designer on the original Hitman and Hitman 2, as well as working as a level designer for Ubisoft on Far Cry 3. These credentials stack up well with the potential direction the development of Crysis 4 could take, with an FPS/stealth shooter combination being a possible design choice for the new game.

Crysis 4 was officially announced back in January, with Crytek also sharing a short teaser trailer alongside an update announcing the new chapter in the FPS franchise. Crytek CEO Avni Yerli stated in the post that the team would be working on “a truly next-gen shooter” and that they are “so hyped for the future” of the game. You can check out the confirmation video right here.

While not much else is yet known about Crysis 4, it’s encouraging to see that development is in the early stages. However, it seems that fans will probably have to wait for at least a couple of years before hearing anything further about the game’s release.
